With every season comes new trends and fads that you just have to try. Most of these trends become passé in a blink of an eye, but a select few can actually turn into go-to staples in our wardrobe.
Here are my trend predictions for summer sixteen:
- French Braids: Cute and practical for summer and fall months, but will disappear once the winter rolls around. This intricate hairstyle hasn’t been created to be hidden under toques. It’s like getting a tattoo and covering it up with makeup – what’s the point? After spending decent chunk of time out of your day splitting your hair into the perfect part, braiding, undoing the braid, then braiding again to perfectly match the other side until you A. give up or B. your arms go numb, you better show it off. French braids are basically pieces of art.
- Leather Backpack: Here to stay. Invest in a quality leather handbag or backpack, it is always helps to upgrade your look and will last a lifetime.
- Shirtdress: A neutral coloured shirtdress is something that will never go out of style and can be worn all year round. This sleek shift silhouette is super flattering and is chic enough to get away with around the office. I can definitely see myself swapping out the nude wedges for tights and ankle boots once the weather cools down in the fall.
- Choker Necklace: Fad. The choker popped up in 2014 as a nostalgic trend from the 90’s and was finally adopted by the masses this year. As a ’94 I couldn’t resist buying into it and I secretly hope this trend becomes a staple. It definitely has the potential with the launch of Pokémon Go and rumours of a Spice Girls reunion, however I really can’t see it lasting until next summer. But for right now, while there are more people trying to catch Pikachu on the street than swiping right on Tinder – long live the 90’s.

I love playing a tourist in my hometown. Exploring all of the cute little nooks and crannies that Fredericton has to offer makes me fall in love with the city all over again. You can find this red clock downtown in the alleyway next to Brewbakers restaurant on King Street.
What I’m wearing: This light denim RD Style shirtdress from Studio 103 was a lucky find! Now, whenever I go shopping, in the back of my mind I am always asking myself if a garment is work-appropriate. As a newly employed graphic designer with the fresh sting of student-debt still lingering in my bank account, it is paramount that the items I buy serve multiple purposes. This dress is not only casual and comfortable, perfect for day-to-day activities, but it is also tailored enough to turn heads at the office.

Hunting for the perfect transitional statement piece for Fall? Look no further. This woven floral romper from American Eagle is on-trend and super flattering on all body types with its wrap design. The best part – it won’t break the bank. Find it online here for just $60. For a Summer look, I paired the romper with boho-inspired jewellery from Alex & Ani and Kate Spade, a cross body bag from Michael Kors, and leather peep-toe wedges from Nine West. For the cooler Fall season, simply add tights, a light cotton jacket or knit sweater and ankle boots to complete the look.
It’s officially rooftop season here in Toronto and I have put together an outfit that works for any sky-high occasion, whether it be for a casual barbecue or a classy cocktail party. A rooftop wardrobe needs to be breathable to beat the heat but also have enough coverage to keep you comfortable once the sun goes down. I found my wide leg pants at American Eagle, black crop at American Apparel, necklaces at Banana Republic, bracelets at Alex and Ani, and earrings at Kate Spade.
This East Coast ensemble is inspired by former Bachelorette & Love It or List It style icon Jillian Harris who always loves to add on a statement piece to take a casual look to the next level. Featured pieces include a TNA brisco button down paired with J Brand blue jeans, a H&M long knit sweater, Roots cabin socks, Ugg classic minis, Alex and Ani bracelets and a statement necklace from Joe Fresh.
